In the process of air drying, water molecules or moisture is removed from the air to protect the air from the undesirable aftereffect of the presence of liquid or condensed water. Compressed air

Air is a mixture of gases. The primary gases are nitrogen and oxygen. Air comprises a set of molecules with a certain kinetic energy. The temperature and the kinetic energy of the air are directly related. When the kinetic energy increases, the temperature of the air also increases. The molecules of air move faster when it is compressed. So, the temperature increases. When the air is compressed, the molecules are brought close to each other and their space is decreased. It's a medium via which energy can be stored and transmitted. Energy can be stored safely with this compressed air. Also, they are more flexible.

 

Like regular air, compressed air also has presence of moisture and water. Therefore, compressed air dryers are used to remove these water molecules and dry the compressed air for the sake of avoiding deadly damages caused by the presence of water. The condensing water molecules may cause damage, corrosion and other problems to the whole system. There are many compressed air systems out of which desiccant air dryers are the most preferred ones.

Instrument air

In most industries, air from the compressed system is used for various functions to be performed. The quality specifications of this compressed air are enough for them. But certain other industries where oil, gas and certain chemicals are produced, need air with certain other quality requirements. Because these industries employ very sensitive equipment that is mainly pneumatically controlled. So, to cope up with all these specifications, instrument air with such specified quality standards are used.

The quality standards of instrument air may be in terms of pressure dew points, size of the particles, lubricant content (close to zero), presence of contaminants etc. Instrument air should be free from any kind of impurities and gases that might cause hazards. Therefore, ‘instrument air’ is a term that refers to compressed air that is extremely clean, hygienic and with the absence of all kinds of impurities. Instrument air is largely used by pneumatic controlled systems.

Supersonic Wind Tunnel

The wind tunnels that can produce supersonic speeds are known as supersonic wind tunnels. It requires a drying facility because, when there is the cooling of temperature the moisture can become condensed. Mostly these wind tunnels are made to use intermittently, not continuously because of their huge power demand. One of the prerequisites for the operation of supersonic wind tunnels is the presence and availability of compressed air. Heatless desiccant air dryers are used in these systems.

Desiccant air dryers

Air dryers operating by using desiccants are mostly used in all the above instances. They use desiccants like activated alumina and molecular sieves.

Regenerative desiccant air dryers come with dual towers. One is for adsorption- i.e, 2for removing all water and moisture content from the air stream whereas the other works on desorption and regeneration of desiccants. The used desiccant is regenerated through this process. These dryers might be heated from the external parts or they are heatless. When the compressed air containing water, molecules come into contact with the alumina beds or molecular sieves bed, adsorption takes place. That is, when they are passed through the bed, water molecules are adsorbed or accumulated on the surface of adsorbents. The air exiting will be free from the impurities and water content as well.

Activated alumina and molecular sieves are the most popular and efficient adsorbents used in these air dryer systems. Activated alumina is made out of aluminium oxides and molecular sieves are made from crystalline metal aluminosilicates.
